You will need to find five pennies with different dates on them for the birthday activity. Decorate a small satchel or pouch to be a fairy bag and place the pennies in the fairy bag. You can use sequins, ribbons and glue to decorate the pouch. Now pick a guest and ask them to pick a penny from the bunch and look at the date, but tell them not to disclose it yet. Now ask the guest to pass the penny around so that everyone can look at the date and make a mental note. Quickly put the penny back into the fairy bag, and touch the bag with a fairy wand. A decorated straw or any stick-like object works well as a magical wand. Now ask the birthday child to pick the chosen penny from the fairy bag. The birthday child will correctly pick the penny out of the bag and show it to all the guest. This is boung to make the kids believe that the magic really worked.
The secret? The birthday child will know which penny was chosen first because coppesr absorbs heat, and the penny everyone has held in their hands will be warm. You will need to inform the birthday kid about the trick before hand. You can try it a few more times with other kids before giving out the secret to the general public. Once everyone knows how the trick really works, let all the children take a turn at picking the pennies.
